Houghton Addition

Kirkland, WA

2009

This was a full renovation of the existing residence and a new addition of a garage with two bedrooms and bathrooms over. Opening up the floor plan for the living space to bring natural light inside was a primary goal. This was done by exposing the truss system and adding skylights down the center of the house and new windows along the south and east sides. The result is quite striking. An almost square living area with kitchen, dining and living makes for a very flexible space. A deck was added off the back side and a series of concrete planters off the front to form a more inviting entry up to the front door of the second level living space. Hardwood floors on the main level and stained concrete on the lower level with radiant floor heating makes for a very comfortable house in the winter and the operable skylights and windows work well to cool the house in the summer.
